He received his primary education in the district schools and then entered Battle Creek College, in Michigan, as a student. Later he entered the University of Michigan and began the preliminary work of his profession. After finishing the preparatory course he entered that celebrated institution, the Western Pennsylvania Medical College, from which he graduated in 1891. He then took a post-graduate course in the New York hospitals, after which he opened an office in Pittsburgh, and commenced the practice of his profession. He was quite successful in building up a practice there, but found the climate very trying on his health, and returned to his native place, where he then remained.
He was a Republican, and kept himself well posted on all the subjects of the day. He took a deep interest in educational matters, and served as president of the school board. He also served as township collector and supervisor. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Socially, he was a member of the I. O. O. F., the K. O. T. M., and the Masonic fraternity, and was medical examiner for several lodges.

She was a native of the state of Maine, but during her early youth, her parents removed to Iowa and took her with them. She was educated in the Iowa State Normal School, after which she entered college at Battle Creek, Michigan, from which she graduated. She then entered the University of Michigan, graduating from that institution, with high honors and a degree of M. D., in 1879. She began the practice of her chosen profession at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, and after two years' experience there she again entered the University of Michigan, taking a special course in bacteriology. After marriage she and her husband practiced together with success. She was an unusually skillful surgeon.
