In 1833 he removed with his parents to Indianapolis, Indianapolis, and was educated at the University in that city. He entered the printing office of John D. Defrees, where he learned his trade. In 1849 he went to California, where he remained for fifteen years, with the exception of two years spent in Chili, South America. While in California he spent a number of years in the mines, and for four years was State Printer at Sacramento. He returned to the east and engaged in the wholesale mercantile business in Chicago, then in 1872 removed to Boulder Valley, Montana. There he occupied the position of Circuit Judge, and was prominently connected with school interests of the territory.
