He was educated in public schools of Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and at Greensburg and subsequently attended Duff's College, Pittsburgh. For a number of years he was a bookkeeper, but then for more than eighteen years was in the printing business. He was a Republican, and a member of
the First Reformed Church.
