He was educated in the common schools and remained at home until he had attained to man's estate. On his departure from the homestead he went to northwestern Iowa and Minnesota where he remained but a few months, being forced at the end of that time to return home on account of illness. In 1888, after his recovery, he settled on a farm East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and which consisted of twenty-two and one-half acres. He cultivated his estate with a view to the raising of fruit and to gardening.
