He first saw the light at the family homestead on the Isle of Que, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, which he later came to own, his widowed mother residing with him. He was reared as a farmer boy, and his education was begun in what was known as the Narrows School. After attending the district school for some time he pursued higher branches of study in the public schools of Selinsgrove. After leaving school he took complete management of the homestead. In politics he was a stanch Republican, as all the members of the family were beginning from the organization of that party.
