He always resided at the old family homestead, following farming as an occupation. He was a Lutheran in religious faith. He died when over seventy years of age. He had children by both his second and third marriages.

He resided throughout his life on the Isle of Que, Pennsylvania, and operated a farm which was still owned by his descendants at the beginning of the twentieth century.
