General Notes: Husband - Purl Hugh Marshall
He removed to California in 1927 and resided at Anaheim, Santa Ana and Midway City respectively.
He enlisted in Co. E, 20th Engineers, December 14, 1917. Forty days after enlisting he embarked on the "Tuscania" bound for France. Went to Halifax and picked up a convoy which consisted of 12 boats and a cruiser, convoyed by thirteen destroyers. On the 13th day as the fleet entered North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland, the "Tuscania" was torpedoed and sank with a loss of 212 men. Purl was in the last boat to leave the ship. After being landed in Northern Ireland, he and other survivors went to England and then to France. The 20th was a Forestry unit and was engaged in getting out lumber and railroad ties. He remained in France fourteen months and was discharged from service April 16, 1919. After returning home, he served as cashier of the Farmers and Miners State Bank at Crestline, KS. One night the bank was blown up by robbers. At a later date he was held up at the point of a gun and forced to sack up all the money by two bandits, but help arrived and a rain of bullets from officers and citizens caused the bandits to flee without their loot.
