General Notes: Husband - William "Stiller Billy" McCandless

He came from Ireland when a youth, with his parents, and settled near Turtle Creek, in what was then Westmoreland, but later became Allegheny County, PA, where they remained until their demise. William came to Centre Township, Butler County, PA, in 1796, and located 200 acres of land making it his home until his death. He was for many years a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church, and a most exemplary and honorable man. His was one of the first cabins erected in the township, and it was christened it “The Hermitage,” according to an arrangement made by the first settlers. [HBC 1883, 344]

He was the youngest son of John and Jane (Carothers) McCandless and was a distiller by trade, following that calling in addition to being a farmer. For this reason he was known as 'Stiller Billy', since it was necessary to distinguish him from another 'Billy' McCandless who arrived in the neighborhood at the same time. As a pioneer, in 1796, at age nineteen, he came to Center Township, Butler County, PA, with his three brothers. He settled on a tract of four hundred and twenty-four acres, then known as “The Hermitage”. It was located about one and one half miles north of Unionville on the road leading from that place to Isle (later part of the Moraine Park - Lake Arthur). By purchase, he added to his holdings until he had about a thousand acres in all. Later this was divided into several farms. The old homestead where William located, lived and died is still [1977] owned by his lineal descendants. It is the only one of the original homesteads owned by the four pioneer McCandless brothers that is still held by descendants of the same name.
In 1835 William McCandless built his second house, twice remodelled thereafter, on the present location. It stands some feet to the left and about five rods in front of the original cabin site. This McCandless family were members of the Muddy Creek Presbyterian Church, where William was a ruling elder for many years. At the time of his death, those of the family still at home were his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Mary Ann, and his son, William Coulter. The other members had married and established homes elsewhere. William died in his seventy-third year, forty-nine years after his marriage. At his death, the farm descended to his son, William Coulter McCandless, who, with his mother and sister, continued to reside here for fifteen years, until he married Margaret Amelia Bingham, who added to the home. William McCandless and his wife are buried in the Unionville Cemetery as also are buried all of their seven sons and two of their four daughters. Parts of the original homestead were later owned by three of William Coulter McCandless' sons: William B., Origen G., and Jennings C. The children of these men are the third generation of McCandless to be reared in the home. [MRF, 8]
