General Notes: Husband - William Elliott Allen
He was a graduate of Grove City College, 1889, Western Theological Seminary, 1892, and honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, Grove City College, 1913; Mason; Presbyterian minister with a service record of forty-two years in the following places: Frankfort Springs, 1891-1897; The Old Stone Church, Wheeling, WV, 1897-1911; New Cumberland, WV, 1911-1924; Lemington Church, Pittsburgh, PA, 1924-1930; and Harrisville, PA, 1930 until his death in 1934. He took a leading part in the organization of the Presbytery of Wheeling and the Synod of West Virginia and was elected Moderator of the Synod meeting in Buckhannon, W. Va., in 1912. He served for many years on one or more important committees of the Synod and Presbytery. In the Synod he was chairman of the committee on "Spiritual Life of the Churches," and later on "Freedmen" and following that of "General Church Work." Those of the Ministry who knew him best have said, "When William E. Allen laid down his task and went home, one of the kindliest, gentlest, truest spirits God ever gave to the Church in our community passed within the veil."
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Henderson
Through all the years of her husband's ministry, she was his assistant, inspiration and encouragement. Wherever his ministry took him, she was a wise and efficient leader in church activity and especially in the important work of the women in the Presbytery and Synod. After the passing of Dr. Allen, Mrs. Allen has continued to carry on religious and social work despite her age of four score years.
A number of years ago following a Union Evangelistic Campaign a group of the ministers gave her a signed testimonial in appreciation of her assistance in the campaign from which the following is quoted: "Mrs. Allen had special charge of the personal work among girls and women and so tactful and effective was her service that not one word of adverse criticism came with reference to her part of the Evangelistic Campaign. Mrs. Allen is a woman endowed by intellect and heart for christian work. She is a speaker of unusual ability, a woman of culture and common sense, one able to adapt herself to all classes of people and to all conditions. She possesses that keen sense of the 'fitness of things' that enables her to speak the right word at the right time and do the right thing in the right way."
Mrs. Allen was a life member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union; member of Highland Chapter Order of Eastern Star; Hiram Mercer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Grove City; King's daughter for fifty years; First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, Pa. For many years she resided in Pittsburg, but spent the summer months in the ancestral home at Hendersonville.
