He was educated at the public schools and Washington and Jefferson College. In 1900 he began teaching school at East Liberty, Pennsylvania, in the department of mathematics, but later became the principal of the East Liberty Academy. He was connected with the Masonic order, being a member of Homewood Lodge, No. 635, Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Board of Trade at Pittsburgh.
