General Notes: Husband - Lemuel R. Eckles
He was the founder of what became known as Fredonia Institute, and was the first principal of the Sandy Lake Institute and was later superintendent of the Waynesburg schools. He was county superintendent in Mercer County, PA, schools for six years. In 1906 he with his brothers, Asa J. and A. E., compiled what was known as the Hamlin Arithmetic.
His early education was received at the common schools of Fairview Township, Mercer County, PA, and he afterward attended the Sheakleyville Academy, Thiel College, of Greenville, Grove City College, and was a graduate from the Edinboro Normal School, of Erie County, PA, in 1886. He was appointed to the charge of the public schools of Fredonia that year. He was a member of the A. O. U. W., Lodge No. 13, of Fredonia, and also of the P. H. C. He was a member of the Christian Church.
