He was born on the sea while his parents were coming to America. [But the same thing has been said about his brother Francis, Jr.] They were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, who, on account of religious oppression, were driven out of the North of Ireland. They landed at Baltimore, Maryland, and settled in western Pennsylvania.
