His early years were spent on the homestead farm, and he was educated in the public schools in the vicinity of his home. At the age of sixteen years he was apprenticed to learn the carpenter's trade, a calling he followed until 1906, when he established himself in the general contracting business at Coraopolis, where he had resided since 1901. He mades a specialty of cement and concrete work, and had a large patronage from the surrounding country. He constantly employed from ten to twenty men. In political matters he was an Independent, and he and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church. In 1912 he erected for himself a fine residence at No. 1212 Hiland avenue, and he resided there, his wife presiding over the beautiful home with lavish hospitality.
