He was a resident of Mount Vernon, Iowa. He was educated in the public schools and Mount Pleasant Institute. He later attended the Lebanon Valley College, of which he was a graduate. He then went to California as a teacher in a college, spending two years as Greek instructor. He then returned to the Lebanon Valley College, where he occupied the position of instructor in Greek. He took a post-graduate course in Yale College, and while there was selected by the president of Cornell College to occupy the chair of Greek instructor in Cornell. He traveled extensively, visiting all the old countries, and spending some time in Greece.
