General Notes: Husband - John Fickes, Esquire

The Fickes family are of German descent. His father came from Germany prior to the Revolutionary period, and settled in what is now Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was by trade a weaver, and later followed farming. He was shot by an Indian while plowing. His wife was out in the field and saw the murder of her husband. She had with her a little dog, and hid in a hollow log; fearing the dog would bark and reveal her hiding-place, she placed her apron over its head, and though the Indians passed over the log they failed to find her.

He was the founder of York Springs, Huntington Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He reared a family of six sons and four daughters, all of whom settled in that portion of the state and reared large families.
