When young he worked with his father in the glass factory, but after receiving his education he entered the ministry of the Baptist Church, and followed his profession until his death. He was in the pastorate at various places in Iowa such as Muscatine, Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and organized the First Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids. During the Civil War he was chaplain of the Twelfth Iowa Regiment volunteer infantry, six months, but could not endure the service, hence resigned.
