The Eatons came to Pennsylvania from near Fredericksburg, Maryland, where Benedict Eaton was born. He was a young man of twenty-four when he first settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where he followed his business of making splint bottom chairs.

He and his wife were the parents of eight children, six of whom were still living in 1918, including Joseph, the second child.
