He was educated at Todd's, White's and Barnhart's schoolhouses in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. For five years he was engaged in various positions in the general store, and then as clerk in Kelly & Jones works.
He was a member of the Baptist church and was active in his support of the Republican party. He served several terms as director of the schools of Hufftown, where he resided.
