He was educated in public and private schools, and the Episcopal Academy at Philadelphia. He studied law for one year in his father's office, then in 1877 removed to Oil City, Pennsylvania, and was engaged for a number of years in the oil brokerage business. He was one of the first of the petroleum brokers to realize that speculation in oil certificates was passing, and turned his attention to refining Pennsylvania oil. In 1897 in partnership with Hon. James A. Fawcett, he established the Crystal Oil Works at Rouseville, Pennsylvania.
Colonel Selden was first lieutenant and quartermaster of the Sixteenth Regiment Infantry, National Guard of Pennsylvania, from 1888 to 1895; colonel commanding Twenty-first Regiment of Infantry, Pennsylvania National Guard, from 1898 to 1900; lieutenant-colonel and division inspector of rifle practice, National Guard, Pennsylvania, from 1900 to 1905.
He was a vestryman of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church of Oil City, and a Mason. He was a director of the Citizens' Banking Company; president of the Venango Security, Building and Loan Association, and president of the Home Saving and Loan Association. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Founders and Patriots of America, the Colonial Society of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Ivy and Venango clubs. Colonel Selden's library was one of the most complete in Venango county.
