General Notes: Husband - John Wesley "Jack" Henderson
After the death of his mother, he lived and grew to man-hood with his grandfather Henderson, along with another fatherless grandson, Justus, son of Joanna. Both figured in a number of escapades. Both served in the Civil War, and later removed to Kansas. Justus taught school for some years, while John Wesley became a prosperous farmer. He was elected Probate Judge of Smith County, KS, for two terms or four years. In early manhood both legally assumed the name of Henderson.
He served in the Civil War, enrolling as a private, Co. E, 16th Cavalry at Franklin, Pennsylvania, September 9, 1862, at the age of 23 years. Mustered into service at Harrisburg, September 27, 1862. Pro-moted to Corporal, June 13, 1863. Transferred to Co. I, 16th, Cavalry, date unknown. Honorably discharged June 17, 1865. (Pa. Records, Adjutant General's Office.)
After returning from the War, he married and about 1875, he removed with his family to Smith County, KS, and settled on a soldier's homestead claim a few miles from the town of Smith Center. He became a prosperous farmer and highly respected citizen. In the fall election of 1886, he was elected probate judge of Smith County for a term of two years, and was re-elected in 1888, serving four years. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and the G. A. R.
