He was a carpenter by trade but later abandoned this in favor of farming. After his marriage he purchased a homestead of one hundred acres, to which he later added five acres. On this addition he erected a commodious residence.

She was very young when she was deprived by death of both of her parents, and was sent to an aunt to be cared for. Here, however, she was treated very badly, and she found a way out of her difficulties by running away and joining a party who were coming to America. Upon her arrival she went to Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
