He was born on the home farm in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was four years of age when his parents brought him to the farm in Washington County, where his school days were passed. After the death of his father he managed the home place. He resided on a farm lying two and a half miles from Charleroi, and five miles from Monongahela City. He raised a large quantity of excellent stock. In politics he was a Republican, and served his township in various offices of trust.
