He taught school for several years, beginning at 16 years of age. He graduated as Bachelor of Science in college in 1871, then served as superintendant of schools for several years; graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1878; graduated in the regular college of Physicians and Surgeons of the University of Michigan, at Ann Arbor Mich, in 1875. He practiced medicine for 25 years.
