He was born on the home farm in Wayne township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and became well known in church, township and county affairs.

He filled many local offices; was Director of the Poor of Erie County for three years (1876-79); Constable one year, and Notary Public six years. He and his wife were members of the U. P. Church, in which he was Treasurer, Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Elder for about fifteen years. He was a Republican in politics.
