General Notes: Husband - John O. Saxton
The eldest of his siblings and the only son, he worked on his father's farm, attending the common schools until he entered Dickinson College, where he remained three years; then taught school four years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; then engaged in farming in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Saxton moved to Mechanicsburg.
He was president of school board of directors, was in town council several terms, and held various other local offices of trust. In 1880 he was a Democratic elector for president from the Nineteenth Congressional District of Pennsylvania. He was one of the board of managers for the Cumberland County Agricultural Society; was past high priest of Mechanicsburg Chapter R. A. M.; past officer of the I. O. O. F. Lodge and Encampment, and district deputy grand master for Cumberland County two terms. He was treasurer of the Mechanicsburg Bible and Tract Society, beginning from its organization in 1871.
Gov. Pattison appointed him a delegate from the Nineteenth Congressional District to the Farmers' National Congress held at St. Paul, Minn., in August, 1886.
He owned a farm in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, of 145 acres; and Mrs. Saxton was owner of a farm in Lower Allen Township, of over 200 acres, besides a fine residence on corner Main and York Streets, Mechanicsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Saxton were members of the Presbyterian Church, in which he served as secretary of the board of trustees. Mr. Saxton's family was of English and his wife's people were of Scotch-Irish lineage, and they were among the oldest families in the county.
He was reared on the family homestead. He received his preliminary education in the local schools, and later graduated from Dickinson college, after which he taught school for four years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He then resumed farming in Silver Spring township.
Mr. Saxton was one of the most active Democrats of his locality, and held many positions of trust and responsibility. He served as school director; in the town council for a number of years, and also occupied various offices of less importance. In 1880 he was Democratic-elector from the 19th Congressional district of Pennsylvania. For some time he served as a burgess of Mechanicsburg. He was on the board of managers of the Mechanicsburg Agricultural Society. Fraternally, he was a Mason, and was past high priest of Mechanicsburg Chapter, R. A. M.; past officer of the I. O. O. F. lodge and Encampment, and served as district deputy Grand Master for Cumberland county two terms. In the Presbyterian Church he held many offices, and was treasurer for the Mechanicsburg Bible and Tract Society for thirty years. In August, 1886, he was honored by appointment from Governor Pattison as delegate from the 19th Congressional district to the Farmers National Congress held at St. Paul, Minnesota. For a number of years he was president of Chestnut Hill Cemetery Association, as well as director.
