General Notes: Husband - Charles Washington Mackey

Died Mar 12, 1855. [HVC 1879, 457]

His early boyhood was spent in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he learned his trade, (the wagon-making business) with William Peary. At the age of about twenty-one, he removed to Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he commenced business for himself. About 1829 he came to Franklin, where he carried on the business of wagon making until about the year 1860, when he retired. He was a man of great energy, and force of character, and was considered one of the most upright and honorable citizens in the county. He was a ruling elder of the first Presbyterian church for many years; was coroner of the county; was a Mason of high standing, and took a lively interest in politics, adhering strongly to the Democratic faith. [HVC 1879, 485]

He established a wagon factory on Elk street below South Park in Franklin, Pennsylvania, in 1832, but soon afterward erected a shop on Liberty street, opposite the site of the Rural house, where he carried on business about thirty years. He was the pioneer in this line in Franklin, and manufactured more wagons, etc., than the home market demanded, taking his surplus stock to towns farther east where he sold it readily. One of the oldest members of the Venango bar, S. P. McCalmont, said that Mr. Mackey was as honest a mechanic as he ever knew, and his wagons were superior in the material used and honest workmanship to any that came into this market. [HVC 1890, 390]

He passed his early life on the home farm. In his youth he learned the trade of wagonmaker with William Peary, at Wilmington, Delaware, and about the time he attained his majority went to Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in the business on his own account. He also followed that line for a number of years in Lycoming County, in December, 1831, settling at Franklin, Venango County, where he remained until his death. For nearly thirty years after his arrival at Franklin he carried on the manufacture of wagons and carriages, as well as blacksmithing, operating what was then considered a large establishment, and retiring in 1860, after a very successful career. As an able business man and a citizen of the most reliable character he held the esteem and confidence of the best element in the community, and used his influence in the furtherance of its worthiest movements, but he was not ambitious for official honors and did not solicit them. He served a term as coroner, however. The social and religious enterprises of the community had his cooperation and support, the Presbyterian Church counting him among its most valued members, and he was a ruling elder for a number of years. Fraternally he was a Mason, a charter member of Myrtle Lodge, No. 316, F. & A. M. Politically he was a Democrat. [HVC 1919, 412]

General Notes: Wife - Julia Ann Fagundus

She was born in Chester County, PA. [HVC 1879, 485 & CAB, 412]

The following extract from an obituary in the Venango Spectator shows the estimation in which Mrs. Mackey was held by the community in which she had lived more than half a century: “She was in the best sense of the term, everybody's friend. She had love and sympathy for everybody. She never had an unkind word to say about any person, and would not even permit harsh criticism in her presence. This sweetness of disposition was reflected in her face and manner. She wore the visible sign and seal of a good heart.” [HVC 1890, 770]
