General Notes: Husband - Deacon John Dunham

He came to America from Leyden, Holland, in the "Mayflower," sailing under the name of John Goodman, and was registered as an unmarried man. This was necessary to effect his escape to the New World in safety, owing to the religious persecutions of those times. He settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he was an honored member of the community. His wife was Abigail Wood, who was distantly related to him. His son John was born about the time of the sailing of the vessel, and the young mother and her child were not permitted to accompany him. She, however, managed to rejoin her husband in Plymouth.

He was born at Scrooby in 1589, where he joined the Puritans, assumed the name John Goodman and escaped to Holland in 1608. Under the same name he sailed in the "Mayflower" in 1620, resuming his proper name upon reaching New England. He was deacon of the Plymouth church in 1633, and was deputy to the first general court of Plymouth in 1639.
