He was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and learned the trade of a ship carpenter in his younger days. For some years he followed his trade in various parts of the country, then settled down on a farm in Middlesex Township, Butler County, where he followed farming the remainder of his days.
He and his wife were members of the Middlesex Presbyterian Church.
