He received what was considered a good education for those days, and for a considerable period of time was engaged in teaching school in Jackson County, Ohio. Later he took up the trade of carpentry and also engaged in farming, combining the two for a period of thirty years, when he abandoned the former, but continued to reside upon his farm, which consisted of two hundred acres of well cultivated land.
