General Notes: Husband - James Work
He removed with his parents in 1798 or 1799 to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, near Squirrel Hill, Ligonier Valley; then came with his parents on pack horses to Indiana County in 1804, and settled on the old Work farm, where Elijah Work was born and died. He told of a trip that he and his mother made to Big Spring, when he was a young man, to visit their friends. They went on horse-back and took the two youngest children with them, and had great trouble to find places to stay at night, on account of the inhospitality of the people in the middle counties. Sometimes they could not find a lodging place until 10 o'clock at night. He and his brother Scroggs worked two summers near Ebensburg, on the turnpike leading from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, earning money to pay for the farm or homestead on which the Work family was raised.
He married and spent his life on the Ewing farm, and raised his family of
eleven children there. He helped his father-in-law to distil whisky in his early life, but became a total abstinence man in about 1830 to 1835. He also espoused the Abolition cause and worked earnestly for it from 1840 to the time of his death, and his home was sometimes the refuge of the oppressed. Members of his family acted as conductor from their house to points farther north with groups of fleeing slaves.
He was not a leading man in either church or state, but was well read in both and could be relied on for counsel or active work in either line, and
was always true to his moral convictions and counselled his family to walk in the right way and meet him in Heaven.
