He settled in Plainfield township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, where he took up a large tract of land. He was an ensign in Colonel Arthur St. Clair's (Second Pennsylvania) battalion of the Continental Line, and served in the Canada campaign of 1776. He was a man of prominence and influence in the notable events following the struggle for independence.
