He was educated in the public schools of his native township, in those of Wilkinsburg, and in the Wilkinsburg Academy. In early manhood he commenced following farming, and made it his life's work. He had a farm of seventy acres, on which he raised fruits and vegetables, and also had a fine herd of dairy cows. Politically he was Independent, and in religious belief, a member of the Presbyterian church.
