He attended the schools of his native county, and then learned the trade of bricklaying under the supervision of his father. Later he worked in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and after his marriage he took charge of the farm owned by his wife.
In December, 1912, he was stricken with paralysis, and was in poor health thereafter. Politically he was a Democrat, and he and his wife were members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church.
