The McClures were an old Cumberland Valley family, he and his wife, being early settlers of West Pennsboro township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Of Irish parentage, he became a farmer and miller of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.
