He was of Scotch descent, and for many years was an extensive stock grower in Australia, besides holding valuable interests in gold mining. When he came to the United States he settled in Hickory township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, purchased a large farm, and was chiefly engaged in dealing in stock.
