He attended school in Burgettstown, during boyhood and youth, after which he assisted his father on the home farm in Smith Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, for some years. In 1887 he embarked in the furniture business at Bur­gettstown and later added to his original stock and carried on a large trade in furniture, wall paper and carpets, his patronage coming from the town and also from the adjacent country.
He and his wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church at Bur­gettstown, of which he was one of the trustees. In poli­tics he was a Democrat and was formerly a member of the town council and of the school board. He also served as one of the directors of the Union Agricultural Association.
