He was born on a farm at Brownsville, Pennsylvania, and afterward removed to West Virginia, where he married. He and his wife had eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, of whom Jacob was the third son. He had one child with his second wife, deceased before 1889.
He was a captain of militia, and followed farming for a great many years.
