He grew to manhood on his father's farm, attended the common schools of his township, and then for an occupation chose farming. He owned an excellent farm of one hundred and seventy-two acres of land which was under a good state of cultivation, and on which was a fine mansion. This farm was within one-quarter of a mile of the well known Redstone Presbyterian church. He was a Republican in political matters.
