His education was obtained in the public school. He was variously engaged as hotel keeper, merchant, coal and coke superintendent and banker. He later lived a retired life at Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The church of his choice was the Presbyterian, and politically he affiliated with the Republican party, but never sought office.
