General Notes: Husband - John Elder, Jr.

He was educated in the public and high schools of New Castle, Pennsylvania, and on leaving school went to work for the Witherow and Gordon Engineering Works, in New Castle, with which he remained three years. In 1888 he became a messenger in the employ of the National Bank of Lawrence County. He rose rapidly, from one post of importance to another, until in 1918 he was raised to that of cashier. Later he became a director in the New Castle Safe Deposit and Trust Company, in the Mahoning Trust Company, and in the New Castle Paper Mills, and he was vice-president of the Community Savings Loan Association, the largest and most important and influential in the county capital.
A devotee to civic and community interests, to sports and outdoor life in general, and to business progress, he was a member of the Lawrence Club; the New Castle Field Club, of which he was treasurer and in which he was a director; of the New Castle Board of Trade; the New Castle Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; the Valley of New Castle Consistory, thirty-second degree, and of the New Castle Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. His church was the First Presbyterian, of New Castle.
