General Notes: Husband - Dr. Charles D. Fortney
He was born on the old family homestead in Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he was educated in the public schools. He read medicine with Dr. J. H. McConnigha and afterward entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, graduating in the spring of 1854 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He immediately began practice in Adamsburg, where he remained two years, going at the end of that time to West Unity, Williams County, Ohio. After practicing there four years he returned to his native county and township, settling at Stanton and after a time moving to Pleasant Unity.
In March, 1865, he enlisted as assistant surgeon in the Eleventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, serving as such until the close of the war and being mustered out July 1, 1865. On his return to Pleasant Unity he resumed the practice of his profession, and in 1873 went to Scottdale. After twenty years of professional labor in that place, he went about 1893 to Pittsburgh, where for some four years he was associated with his son-in-law, Dr. H. B. Orr. He then retired from active practice and returned to Scottdale. He and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal church.
