General Notes: Husband - Alexander Thompson
He came from strong Covenanter forbears; his grandfather fought in the famous battle at Bothwell in 1679.
[Surname "Thomson"] He emigrated from Scotland to Franklin County, with his family of thirteen children, in 1777, and settled midway between Shippensburg and Chambersburg, at a point called Scotland, in honor of his native place. [HCC 1886, 397]
He, his wife and eleven children embarked in the ship "Friendship," at Creenock, Scotland, in July, 1771, and arrived at Boston, Massachusetts, September 10 following. He removed to Pennsylvania, and settled in Franklin County, in July, 1772. Of his children, thirteen were born in Scotland, of whom the two oldest did not come to America; the two youngest were born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. [GPHAV, 488]
He was born five miles out from Glasgow, Scotland, and married and reared, in his native country, a family of thirteen children. In 1773 he came, with eleven of his children, to Pennsylvania, and settled in Franklin County, by advice of Dr. Witherspoon, of Princeton college, with whom he was well acquainted. He was a Scotch Covenanter, and a man of influence in his community, where he was highly respected as a consistent Christian and a reliable man. He was a farmer, lived to an advanced age, and gave name to the village of Scotland, Pennsylvania, in honor of his native country. Three or four of his sons served in the revolutionary war.
