General Notes: Husband - Sylvester McCartney

At the age of sixteen he learned the shoemaker's trade. This occupation he followed until 1874, when he purchased the homestead, which he farmed until his death. During the Civil War he enlisted in 1861 as a member of Company I, Fifty-seventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, but was discharged after a short term of service on account of a severe illness.
He was an ardent Republican, and an active member of the Christian church.
