He was educated in the public schools of West Liberty township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and in the private school of Rev. Gray. He left school at nineteen years of age, and was employed in the iron-mills of Pittsburgh. In 1883 he and his brother engaged in the grocery trade. He was also engaged in farming, delighting in fine-bred horses. He was a member of the F. & A. M., and the I. O. O. F., and in politics was independent.
