He was born on a farm near Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania. A fierce battle was fought in a peach orchard, on this place, during the Civil War.

Civil War: He served in company A, 67th Pennsylvania volunteers about six months.
For ten years he was engaged in the mercantile business in Advance, and later was employed in farming.
