He was educated in the Franklin Academy, where his father was principal. He was brought up to hard labor, and when embarking out on life's career for himself he had no money-nothing but stout hands and a willing heart, and by frugality and unabating efforts he secured a beautiful farm near the village of Jamestown, Pennsylvania.

He was a teacher in the early part of his life and a farmer in his later years.
