He and his father were blacksmiths. It is related of his father that his patrons thought he was almost a perfect workman. When asked if he could do anything his answer usually was: "Yes," or "All right, just leave it." When one of his regular patrons brought him a darning needle, which his wife had broken the eye of, and asked him if he could mend it, he told him to "leave it."
