In 1881 he engaged in the mercantile business at Dry Run, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in partnership with W. H. Coons under the firm name of Coons & Alexander.
In religious faith he was a Presbyterian, for twenty years having been an elder in the Upper Path Valley Church. He was a director in the Path Valley Mutual Fire Insurance Company beginning in 1891, and secretary of that company beginning in 1893. He was one of the charter members of the Tuscarora Bank at Blairs Mills, Pennsylvania, and a director in that bank. He owned 180 acres of the original tract of land taken up by his ancestor, the pioneer Reynold Alexander, which had been in the Alexander name ever since.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and in politics was a Republican.
