He grew to maturity in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and there learned the carpenter's trade. While working at his trade, he injured one of his hands so severely as to necessitate amputation, and he then engaged in farming. He came to Butler County, in 1864, purchased the Brown farm in Middlesex township, and resided there. Both he and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church, and politically, he was a Republican.
