Mildred L. DeWoody, worked at News-Herald
Mrs. Mildred DeWoody, 83, former Rocky Grove resident and former member of The News-Herald news staff, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday at her residence, 1929 S.E. 44th Terrace, Gainesville, Fla.
She was born Mildred McDaniel in Rocky Grove May 25, 1900 and in her early years was adopted by a Kinch family.
After graduation from Rocky Grove High School she was employed by The News-Herald and spent 29 years in newspaper work. She conducted a Rocky Grove news column but was also a general reporter and for a time was telegraph editor. In his late years she assisted the late James B. Borland, founder of the newspaper, with a daily column and later continued the column under the heading of The Founder's Column.
"Millie," as she was familiarly known, was active in Rocky Grove activities. Just as she tried to continue the spirit of the newspaper founder, she was compelled to keep the community spirit alive that had been instilled by the late "Uncle" Cy Phipps, early Rocky Grove leader and her predecssor as the Rocky Grove news reporter.
Later she worked at Polk Center and at the Evangelical Home in Lewisburg and for nearly 10 years at the Sunland Home in Gainesville.
She was married to John P. DeWoody on Aug. 12, 1950 and they moved to Florida in 1956.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Gainesville.
Surviving are her husband and a daughter by a previous marriage, Mrs. Robert (Margaret Lusher) Urey of Clarkston, Ga., and by four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday from the Johnson Hayes Funeral Home in Gainesville.
